How does the global warming affects the Arctic ?

The Arctic has experienced extremes climatic condition over the past millions years. During the 9th and 15th century, the temperature of Arctic was warmer than before and it was called Medieval Warm Period. After the Little Ice Age that was finished in 1860, the Arctic temperature has increased.

The change of temperature during the past and the 21st century have effected the Arctic sea. The Arctic sea ice area has decreased about 3.2% every decade from 1976. In the areas where it didn’t melt, the sea ice has become thinner than before. Some researches say that the Arctic sea ice might disappear completely in the future.

The Arctic sea ice keeps the temperature in the polar regions cold and helps moderating the global climate. It reflects 80% of the sunlight and the ocean absorbes 90%. Over the past 30 years, the thickness and the extent of the sea ice have declined. On march 5, 2020, the Arctic sea ice has reached the 11th lowest maximum Arctic sea ice extents from 1979 to now. (15,05 million square kilometres)

How does the global warming affects the life of the polar bears?

We all know the polar bears. We all have already seen them on the television or at zoo. But due to the global warming, they are loosing their home like the orangutans. The orangutans can be saved and be brought to a help center and they can return living in the forest after they’ve learned how to survive, but the situation for the polar bear is even more worse.

The polar bear normally spend all their life on the Arctic ice. For some periods in the year they stay on land, but they still use the sea ice for hunting. During spring, they hunt intensively to preserve foods for the long winter. Now, the sea ice in Arctic is melting, which forces the polar bears to move from ice to ice and they need to use more energy to catch their foods. The changement of temperature affects heavily and threatens the life of polar bear. Before, they use the sea ice for hunting, resting, mating and travelling, however, they are now loosing their habitat and they are forced to stay in a energy lack period for a longtime. It also makes giving birth harder for the polar bears.

One polar bear needs to eat foods that contain at least 12,325 calories a day to maintain their normal energy. But the researchers found that 4 of 9 polar bears can’t find food that contains the amount of calorie and they have been loosing weight.

Because of the Arctic warming which is caused by the global warming, the number of polar bears have been diminishing from the last century until now for about 40%.

What causes the global warming ?

In nowadays, we profit the advantage of the fast development of science and the high technology. The quality of our live has been way more better than one hundred years ago. But while we benefit from the advantage of the science development, we always forgot the consequences.

If you have ever paid attention, you would have realized that deforestations has been going on from the 90s until now. Millions of trees were cut down and rainforests were destroyed. 39 million areas of rainforests were destroyed in 2017 for the need of humans such as paper, palm oil, etc. 50% of plant and animal species on earth live in rainforests. 40% of the air we breath are produced by rainforests. Many animals have been loosing their home because of the deforestation, like the orangutans, the squirrels, the coons, and that’s not the only aftereffect of the exploration.

The cause of the global warning is the overexploiting in the 90’s. In the pass 30 years, almost no one realized the serious consequents that will hit the world if we continue to produce pollutions. It’s now that we realize them. People have started to pay attention about the global warming. Did you see the crowd at the global warning manifestation in Montreal last year? Have you noticed the #globalwarningisreal tag on instagram? That people start using recyclable bags and metal water bottles instead of plastic bags and plastic bottles? But it’s somehow already too late. Many animals have become endangered species because of the global warming – for example, the polar bear.
